Obesity in Children

Dr. Jennifer E. Sprague, MD, PhD

Pediatric and adolescent obesity is a growing public health challenge, and as a school nurse, you are on the front lines. This session will provide you with the school nurse playbook filled with the latest strategies and up-to-date knowledge on the increasing rates of childhood obesity and its serious health consequences. We'll equip you to confidently assess, educate, and support students and their families, ensuring you're always game day ready to provide compassionate and effective care.

Understanding Autonomic Dysfunction in Children
Shannon Swiney, PNP
School nurses are increasingly encountering students with POTS and other forms of autonomic dysfunction, and it's time to add these to your school nurse playbook. This presentation provides an in-depth look at these conditions, focusing on the overlap with pediatric obesity and their impact on student health. We'll equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to confidently assess and manage symptoms, so you're game day ready to provide the specialized care and support these students need.

Preventive Service Program

This presentation explores the vital connection between oral health and overall student well-being, highlighting the critical role school nurses play as the first point of contact for many students. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the Preventive Services Program and learn how to integrate these services into your practice. We'll examine how common oral health issues — from the link between diabetes and oral care to the effects of vaping and eating disorders — directly impact a child's health and readiness to learn.By the end of this session, you'll have the strategies you need to add oral health to your game day playbook and improve student outcomes.

Should They Stay or Should They Go, Update 2025

Every day is game day in the health room. This session, building on the highly-requested "Should They Stay or Should They Go?" presentation, provides the updated school nurse playbook for assessing and managing common student illnesses and injuries. We'll sharpen your nursing assessment skills and help you confidently navigate the decision-making process—whether it's sending a student home, recommending medical follow-up, or getting them back to class. Get ready to boost your confidence and be game day ready for whatever comes your way.

Meet our Presenters


Dr. Jennifer E Sprague, MD, PhD

Kelsey Siegel, RHD
Dr. Adam Eaton, MD
Dr. Jennifer E. Sprague, MD, PhD, is a pediatric endocrinologist at Washington University in St. Louis. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, the Fellowship Director for Pediatric Endocrinology, and the co-director of the Pediatric Healthy Start Program. Dr. Sprague specializes in endocrine complications of obesity, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Her clinical practice and research focus on improving care for children and adolescents with these conditions. She completed her medical degree and PhD at Washington University School of Medicine and her residency and fellowship at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
Shannon Swiney, PNP, is a nurse practitioner with a specialty in pediatric cardiology at Washington University in St. Louis. She is the founder and director of the Pediatric Autonomic Dysfunction (PAD) Clinic, which provides care for children with cardiovascular symptoms of autonomic dysfunction, including POTS. Swiney completed her master's degree in pediatric nurse practice at the University of Missouri - Saint Louis. Her areas of focus include dysautonomia, POTS, and preventative cardiology.

Kelsey Siegel, RDH, is a Registered Dental Hygienist for the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services. She is part of the full-time team for the Preventive Services Program (PSP), a program designed to improve oral health for children.

Dr. Adam Eaton is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Washington University in St. Louis and serves as the Chief of the Community Pediatrics Section. He is a board-certified pediatrician and has practiced in the St. Louis area for over two decades. Dr. Eaton is a native of St. Louis, where he attended Washington University School of Medicine and completed his pediatrics residency and chief residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital. He joined Blue Fish Pediatrics in 2009.
